6-piece Sculpture Ensemble: The Duck

6-piece Sculpture Ensemble: The Duck

The sculpture known as 'The Duck' is the most prominent element of the six-piece ensemble by Uwe Schloen on the forecourt of the Deutsches Theater in Göttingen. The work is noted for its characteristic construction of a solid wooden core completely clad in grey lead plates. This technique gives the figure a heavy, almost armor-like texture, creating a compelling contrast to the lightness usually associated with a waterfowl.

Originally installed in 1994, the sculpture is part of a group that blends abstract and figurative forms to address the interaction between humans, nature, and urban space. Due to the softness of the lead and the effects of weathering, the figure underwent extensive restoration in 2003. During this process, the artist intentionally preserved the raw, handcrafted aesthetic, leaving the individual nails and overlapping metal plates visible.

Within the context of Theaterplatz, 'The Duck' serves as a humorous yet melancholic eye-catcher, often perceived as the unofficial mascot of the square. The minimalist design language invites passersby to project their own interpretations onto the figure, while it simultaneously embodies the weight and permanence of modern sculpture. It stands as a central example of Schloen's work with protective shells and the material transformation of everyday motifs.
