The Reunification Fountain in Duderstadt is a powerful monument commemorating the decades of German division and the subsequent reunification of the nation. It features two life-sized figures, a man and a woman, walking toward each other, symbolizing the moment of encounter. Located centrally in the historic old town, the artwork serves as a place of reflection and remembrance for both residents and visitors.
The unique aspect of the sculpture is the depiction of an invisible barrier between the two individuals. Although they are close, they do not touch; their faces appear flattened as if pressed against a glass wall, illustrating the painful separation caused by the Inner German border. A narrow stream of water flowing between the figures reinforces this motif of division, making the historical reality of the 'border trench' physically tangible.
Unveiled in April 1994, the fountain was the result of an artistic competition organized by the city of Duderstadt. The work bridges the city's past as a border town with the hope brought by unity. Today, it is an integral part of the cultural heritage of the Eichsfeld region, serving as a reminder of the importance of freedom and solidarity in a democratic society.
